Marvel’s Civil War: Captain America’s Death (Part 3 of 3)

This is my 3rd and final part of my Marvel’s Civil War write up. Today, I’ll be concentrating on the 5-issue limited series which takes a gander at the aftermath of Captain America’s death by assasination. The series is entitled as Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America. Each of the 5 issues deal with the 5 stages of grief by 5 different people: Denial (Wolverine), Anger (The Avengers), Bargaining (Captain America), Depression (Spider-Man), and Acceptance (Iron Man). And I’ve also got 10 more juicy pictures… But before that, we’ll take a look at what each issue holds.

#1 - Denial

Wolverine has thoughts about the possibility that Captain America didn’t die from gunshot wounds. Thus, he wants to go to S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters to ascertain that Cap was really dead. Unable to convince Winter Soldier (formerly Bucky, Cap’s sidekick) to follow him, Wolverine gets Daredevil to tag along with Doctor Strange creating enchantments on then. On the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier, Wolverines makes his way to the room where Cap’s body is kept. Iron Man appears to tell Wolverine that Cap is really dead, and doesn’t arrest Wolverine so that he can tell others that Cap is really dead. Before he leaves, Wolverine warns Iron Man that if he learns that Stark had anything to do with Captain America’s death, then he would kill him.

#2 - Anger

A poker game among the New Avengers turns sour when Wolverine returns from the helicarrier to inform everyone that Captain America is really dead, and Spider-Man gets much too furious and leaves. Two members of the Young Avenger, Patriot and Hawkeye, leave to hunt some bad guys. Meanwhile, the Mighty Avengers fight the super-villain Tiger Shark and with the aid of Namor, the sub-mariner, they defeat Tiger Shark. Namor reveals that he knows there are missiles hidden in the coastline of Maine, and if they are directed at Atlantis, he will fight back.

#3 - Bargaining

Clint Barton, back from the grave, confronts Iron Man (Tony Stark). Stark reveals Cap’s real shield and allows Barton to use it on the helicarrier deck. Later, Stark asks Barton to become Captain America and restore the faith of the people of the United States. Both go out on a patrol and discover Hawkeye and Patriot defeating a villain. As Stark is about to arrest the duo due to violation of the Superhuman Registration Act, they temporarily disable Iron Man and escape, but are confronted by Barton as Captain America. But then Barton learns that he cannot become the new Captain America, and allows Patriot and Hawkeye to escape and returns the shield to Stark. Stark vows to pursue Barton if he sides with the New Avengers.

#4 - Depression

Spidey visits his Uncle Ben’s grave, saddened by the fact that his legacy will be measured by the lives he lost (Uncle Ben, his parents, Harry Osborn, Gwen Stacy and Captain America), instead of teh lives he saved. He breaks down not knowing whether he can keep going on like this. Suddenly, he sees Rhino at his mother’s grave, and believes Rhino is up to something. Rhino is confused why Spidey attacked him, and accidentally breaks his mother’s tombstone. As Spidey realises his mistake, he cannot bring himself to apologize as Rhino beats him to a pulp. Spidey recall a time where he was defeated by the Hulk and was saved by Captain America, and rises to defeat Rhino just like how Cap defeated the Hulk. Wolverine reveals himself and they go over to the Brooklyn Bridge where Gwen died and argue for a while. Wolverine tells Spidey that no one can get over a death, and everyone has to learn how to deal with it. Wolverine also reveals that the depression is something normal, and the pain will go away someday.

#5 - Acceptance

Captain America’s funeral is held with full military honours usually reserved for presidents. Thousands are in attendance; the public, new and old heroes alike. Tony Stark steps up to speak, but his emotion makes him choke with sadness and he only manages to say “It wasn’t supposed to be this way…”. Sam Wilson takes over, and recounts Cap’s history, his legacy, his inspirational actions, his time being frozen in the Arctic, and his reappearence in the modern time. The New Avengers, at Doctor Strange’s house, watch the funeral on TV while discussing why they can’t go, while Spidey says it would have been worth the risk. Three days later in the Arctic, Iron Man, Wasp and Yellowjacket land in a S.H.I.E.L.D. ship with Steve Rogers’ (Captain America’s) casket. It is revealed that the funeral was a decoy to please the public. After Tony says a heartfelt goodbye to Cap, Namor shows up, also touched by the death of Steve Rogers. He promises that as long as he rules the oceans, Steve Rogers will rest in peace. The casket then slowly sinks into the arctic ocean.

Some information is sourced from Wikepedia, again coz I am lazy to look through the comics again. And now, here are the pics as promised!!!
