Self-Education: THE WHAT & THE WHY
The simple thought of self education seems a bit too hard to handle for some people. But in reality, many people fail to realise in the first place the rudimentary meaning to the phrase of “self education”. In simple terms, and also my POV, “self education” means the act of learning any new subject stemming from the efforts of oneself with the intention of gaining more knowledge on that said subject. Well, isn’t that a handful?
As I had iterated before, self-education among Malaysians is something to be addressed upon. Don’t we owe it to ourself to self-educate? Now, self-educating can also bring meaning in a larger context, such as a self-educating community. You might be wondering why am I drilling this topic now. Simple answer. Our self-education level is at a deplorable state.
Just look at our environment. Being spoon-fed since kindergarten certainly doesn’t bring us much good. Throughout our schooling years, we’ve got textbooks and notes stuffed at our faces that we forget to think and become mindless androids. The problem is, that any free thinking ends up being labeled as a rebellious mind. Ironic huh?
Now, I am not saying that the level of self-education is very bad. Truely, some of us have transcended the robotic minds and learned many valuable stuff by ourselves. In that context, many of us have been guided or helped somehow by greater minds somewhere and somehow that now, we strive for self-education on matters that are important to us and our community. But there still are many of our peers who completely lack this “ability”. Naaaahhh… Ability is a wrong word. They are not simply “not able” to learn by themselves. The simple fact is that NO ONE has ever allowed them the chance to do that.
Self-education makes you look from different perspectives. For some people, this is unacceptable as when their subordinates start to learn and think by themselves, they lose hold of them and their grip on power loosens. Ultimately, the educated mind will usurp the iron fist. Thus, self-education is informally “taboo”.
This is why I eagerly say that self-education is a must. For those who are able to do such things, they can help show the way for those who cannot or haven’t done so. For it is said, that an educated society, is a powerful society. To be continued…
