Watchmen: Graphic Novel and Movie Comparisons & Theatrical Trailer
For those of you who do not poke around much with Hollywood movie news, Watchmen is an upcoming graphic novel-adapted flick to be released in June 2009. Watchmen was a Hugo Award winning novel (the only graphic novel to do so). The movie will be in the veins of 300, which incidentally is also directed by the same person, Zack Snyder.
The picture comparisons are at the bottom, but before that, a little gist on Watchmen. Don’t worry. NO SPOILERS here.
The story is set in an alternate 1985; location: USA. Masked men and women (powerless, of course), had taken up vigilante actions against crime since the 1940s. Richard Nixon is still president. The USA is edging closer and closer to a nuclear war with Soviet Union. The only powered superhero, Dr. Manhattan, is comissioned to the government, providing the USA with a strategic upperhand. In 1977, an act is passed to outlaw masked heroes, forcing them into retirement. Dr. Manhattan and The Comedian are the only active heroes working for the government, while Rorschach still operates outside the law.
The story starts with The Comedian being killed, and the investigation by Rorschach which leads him closer to the unthinkable truth. I won’t provide more details, but you can always download buy the graphic novel and read it for yourself.
I saw many similarities with the Watchmen storyline with our beloved Malaysia.
- The mis-informed public going delirious with all the uncertainty made by the government
- The newspapers spinning stories which sparks panic and unrest among the public
- The corruption of society based on fear of the unknown and the lax of police interference on crime
- The drastic actions taken by individuals on the public by deeming what is right and wrong according to their own interpretation
- The effects of such actions and the flawed sense of responsibility that follows
You may not understand much here, but trust me, that after reading it, you’ll be enlightened.
Anyways, here’s the comparison I made based on the actual scenes in the graphic novel, and the scenens available in the trailer and also the clip from the SCREAM awards. *** UPDATE ***
Yahoo! Movies has provided us with the Theatrical Trailer. So, I didn’t make comparisons from the new trailer and the comic just yet. But believe me when I say that the similarities are WOW! Watch the trailer below, or head over to Yahoo! Movies’ Watchmen Page for the HD version.

I actually prefer the original trailer better (which is on my blog right now). Much more enigmatic and the trailer theme song actually fits the movie itself.
One thing that’s really going to bug me. No squid! I don’t know how good the rewritten ending is going to be without the squid.
[Kavi: Apparently, during test screenings, fans actually said the rewritten ending was quite good.... with Dr. Manhattan going nuclear! And yes, I too love the modified version of the Smashing Pumpkins song in the 1st trailer.. though this trailer features more action.... ]
